(Christina Hendricks) #1

(Updated April 2019)

Title: Introduction to Philosophy
Lead author/editor: Christina Hendricks, (UBC) / @clhendricksbc
Rebus project manager: Apurva Ashok / @apurva
License: CC BY
Target audience: Undergraduate/general survey course for first year college or university
Subject: Philosophy
Target Release Date: Ethics, Philosophy of Mind, Logic – Summer 2019. Philosophy of Religion and Aesthetics shortly after that.

This open textbook series will be targeted at first year (college or university) students, taking introductory survey courses in philosophy, and will touch on the foundational ideas in philosophical inquiry. The book will cover core concepts in Western philosophy, as well as other traditions.

This series of textbooks looks to provide students with an introduction to the canon of Philosophy, giving them the basic framework needed to pursue higher-level courses. The books will be available for course adoptions in Philosophy survey courses around the world, with an expectation that future iterations or companion works can build on this starting point. The table of contents has been drafted, and we are currently looking for authors or section editors on this project.

Chapter authors
We are seeking chapter authors for the following books. Please see the public table of contents for chapters still needed and links to the chapter descriptions.

We are looking for people with a PhD in philosophy, ideally with teaching experience at the first-year level. PhD students in philosophy may also be considered as authors, or can contribute in other ways to the book. We welcome and encourage contributions from members of underrepresented groups within the community of academic philosophy.

Book editor
We are seeking an editor for the Social and Political Philosophy book, after the previous editor stepped away from the project. There is an outline of chapters already drafted, and a few chapters have been written. We will keep the chapters already written or being written but otherwise the book could potentially be revised according to what a new editor would like to see in it.

Other contributions
We also need collaborators to help with:

  • Copyediting
  • Peer review (we will need peer reviewers for Philosophy of Religion and Aesthetics coming up)
  • Proofreading
  • Accessibility checks
  • Formatting in Pressbooks
  • Marketing
  • Promoting course adoptions
